On our flight down from New York to Rincon, my buddies and I had major waves on the brain and not much else, let alone a contingency plan for the highly unlikely event of the surf going flat.
Which is probably why we arrived and there wasn’t so much as a 2-foot peeler to be had… Anywhere.
Our spirits wounded by the dismal water conditions, we defiantly resolved to get our stoke on by whatever means necessary, and set out to find adventure through the narrow winding roads that weave through the jungles of northwest Puerto Rico, navigating with the help of a free tourist map we found at a roadside deli.
We all agreed that turning on to Route 420 had to lead us someplace interesting.
When we came upon the road marker, Zach leaped out of the car like a 5-year-old on Christmas, climbing up on the sign and gleefully declaring his intention to seek permanent asylum here.

It took about an hour and a bunch of wrong turns to get exactly where we wanted to be… Beneath a jungle canopy where a slowly flowing river spilled over a seventy-foot lava formation.
You could hear it from far away as we made our approach, majestic sounding as it was. Mist rose up to the top of the falls from the breaking water below.
I set up my Canon 20D on a tripod across from the falls while Tyler found his way to the top using a frayed rope that was likely set into the rock ages ago.

Once at the top, unceremoniously and without hesitation, Tyler flung himself off the high cliff and 70 feet into the heart of the jungle.

He entered the water with a surpisingly elegant splash!

It was the next best thing to getting barrelled...
